Full Size Floating Bed Frame Plans
A floating bed frame is a stylish and modern way to elevate your bedroom décor. It creates the illusion that your bed is floating just above the floor, giving it a light and airy feel. Building a full size floating bed frame is a relatively straightforward project that can be completed in a weekend with a few basic tools and materials.
Materials:
- 1x6 pine boards (8 feet long) – 6 pieces
- 2x4 pine boards (8 feet long) – 3 pieces
- 3/4-inch plywood (4 feet x 8 feet) – 1 sheet
- 1-1/4-inch pocket hole screws – 1 box
- 2-1/2-inch wood screws – 1 box
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper
- Stain or paint (optional)
Tools:
- Circular saw or miter saw
- Drill
- Kreg pocket hole jig
- Clamps
- Sanding block
- Level
Instructions:
Step 1: Cut the lumber
- Cut the 1x6 pine boards to the following lengths: 2 pieces at 72 inches, 2 pieces at 80 inches, and 2 pieces at 53 inches.
- Cut the 2x4 pine boards to the following lengths: 1 piece at 72 inches and 2 pieces at 57 inches.
- Cut the plywood to 54 inches x 75 inches.
Step 2: Assemble the headboard and footboard
- Attach the 72-inch 1x6 pine boards to the ends of the 72-inch 2x4 pine board using 1-1/4-inch pocket hole screws. Make sure the 1x6 boards are flush with the top and bottom edges of the 2x4.
- Repeat this step to assemble the footboard.
Step 3: Attach the side rails
- Attach the 80-inch 1x6 pine boards to the inside edges of the headboard and footboard using 2-1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure the 1x6 boards are flush with the top and bottom edges of the headboard and footboard.
- Attach the 57-inch 2x4 pine boards to the inside edges of the side rails using 2-1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure the 2x4 boards are flush with the top and bottom edges of the side rails.
Step 4: Attach the plywood platform
- Center the plywood platform on top of the side rails and headboard/footboard assembly.
- Attach the plywood platform to the side rails using 2-1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure the plywood platform is flush with the top edges of the side rails and headboard/footboard assembly.
Step 5: Sand and finish
- Sand all of the exposed surfaces of the bed frame with sandpaper.
- Apply stain or paint to the bed frame, if desired.
Tips:
- Use a level to make sure that the bed frame is level before attaching the plywood platform.
- If you are using a Kreg pocket hole jig, be sure to use the correct size drill bit for the pocket holes.
- Pre-drill all of the holes for the wood screws to prevent the wood from splitting.
- Apply wood glue to all of the joints before assembling the bed frame.
With a little time and effort, you can build a beautiful and stylish floating bed frame that will add a touch of modern elegance to your bedroom.
