How To Build A Full Size Bed Frame

Building a full-size bed frame is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials. A full-size bed frame is designed to accommodate a standard full-size mattress, which measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to build a full-size bed frame:

Materials

  • 6 - 2x6 lumber, 8 feet long
  • 4 - 2x4 lumber, 8 feet long
  • 8 - 3/8-inch bolts, 6 inches long
  • 8 - 3/8-inch washers
  • 8 - 3/8-inch nuts
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps
  • Drill
  • 3/8-inch drill bit
  • 1/2-inch drill bit
  • Socket wrench
  • Carpenter's square
  • Level
  • Measuring tape

Instructions

Step 1: Cut the lumber

Cut the 2x6 lumber into the following pieces:

  • 2 - 75 inches long (side rails)
  • 2 - 54 inches long (headboard and footboard)
  • 2 - 30 inches long (legs)

Cut the 2x4 lumber into the following pieces:

  • 4 - 24 inches long (slats)

Step 2: Assemble the side rails

Apply wood glue to one end of each side rail. Align the ends of the side rails and clamp them together. Drill two 3/8-inch holes through the side rails, 3 inches from each end. Insert the bolts, washers, and nuts to secure the side rails together.

Step 3: Attach the headboard and footboard

Apply wood glue to the ends of the headboard and footboard. Align the headboard and footboard with the side rails and clamp them in place. Drill two 3/8-inch holes through the headboard, footboard, and side rails, 6 inches from each end. Insert the bolts, washers, and nuts to secure the headboard and footboard.

Step 4: Attach the legs

Apply wood glue to the tops of the legs. Align the legs with the inside of the side rails, 6 inches from each corner. Clamp the legs in place. Drill two 1/2-inch holes through the legs and side rails. Insert the bolts, washers, and nuts to secure the legs.

Step 5: Attach the slats

Space the slats evenly across the side rails. Clamp the slats in place. Drill two 1/2-inch holes through the slats and side rails. Insert the bolts, washers, and nuts to secure the slats.

Step 6: Level the bed frame

Place the bed frame on a level surface. Adjust the legs until the bed frame is level. Tighten the nuts on the legs to secure them in place.

Step 7: Finish the bed frame

Sand the bed frame to smooth any rough edges. Apply a coat of paint or stain to the bed frame. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before using the bed frame.
