King Size DIY Platform Bed

If you're looking for a stylish and affordable way to update your bedroom, a DIY platform bed is a great option. Platform beds are low to the ground and have a simple design, which makes them a great choice for modern and minimalist bedrooms. They're also relatively easy to build, even if you're a beginner woodworker.

In this article, we'll show you how to build a king-size platform bed using simple tools and materials. We'll also provide tips on how to customize your bed to match your own style.

Materials

  • 8 pine 2x6s, 8 feet long
  • 4 pine 2x4s, 8 feet long
  • 1 sheet of 3/4-inch plywood, 4 feet by 8 feet
  • 1 gallon of wood glue
  • 1 box of 2-inch wood screws
  • 1 box of 1-inch wood screws
  • Sandpaper or a sanding block
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)

Tools

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Countersink bit
  • Clamps
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil

Instructions

1. Cut the lumber

Start by cutting the 2x6s and 2x4s to length. You will need:

  • 4 2x6s at 8 feet long
  • 4 2x6s at 4 feet long
  • 4 2x4s at 8 feet long

2. Assemble the frame

Next, assemble the frame of the bed. Start by attaching the 4-foot 2x6s to the 8-foot 2x6s using wood glue and 2-inch wood screws. Make sure the 4-foot 2x6s are flush with the ends of the 8-foot 2x6s.

Once the frame is assembled, attach the 2x4s to the inside of the frame using wood glue and 2-inch wood screws. The 2x4s should be placed 12 inches apart.

3. Attach the plywood

Next, attach the plywood to the frame using wood glue and 1-inch wood screws. Make sure the plywood is flush with the edges of the frame.

4. Sand and finish

Once the bed is assembled, sand it smooth using sandpaper or a sanding block. You can then stain or paint the bed to match your own style.

Tips

  • If you want to add drawers to your bed, you can do so by building a box under the bed. Simply attach the box to the frame of the bed using wood glue and screws.
  • You can also add a headboard to your bed by attaching a piece of plywood or MDF to the back of the bed. The headboard can be upholstered in fabric or leather, or it can be painted or stained to match the bed.
  • If you want to make your bed more comfortable, you can add a layer of foam or batting to the top of the plywood. You can then cover the foam or batting with a piece of fabric or leather.

Building a DIY platform bed is a great way to save money and add a personal touch to your bedroom. With a little time and effort, you can create a bed that is both stylish and functional.
